Trumbull wildlife control Tip of the Month:
Where Are Bats Most Likely to Live?
If you have seen a lot of movies where bats are depicted, you often see them out in the desert, living in the mountains, or in other world types of settings. Farmers frequently report bats inside their barns or the attic of their house. They are often seen in movies where people are camping or they swoop down across the desert to devour insects during the night.
Because of the settings where you normally see them on television and in movies, you probably believe you have a pretty clear idea where bats are most likely to be found. However, it may surprise you if you found out what was the natural habitat of these animals.
A Bat Can Go a Long Way
The important thing to understand about a bat is that these animals can fly up to 50 miles in one night. That means that they can live a long distance away from their food, and still have plenty of time to return by morning time to get into their home and get to sleep.
These are nocturnal creatures. That means they sleep during the daytime and hunt during the night. Because they are quite blind, they are looking for a dark place to live. This needs to be the case even during the daylight hours. They are a sitting duck for most predators if they are in a well lit area so their home is usually in a place that is quite dark, even during the day.
Where Do Bats Live?
Bats can be found on almost every continent of the planet. However, they are found in large numbers in the Western Hemisphere, located in North, South, and Central America. They are found in the Midwestern United States, in the deserts, swamplands, mountain areas, even in the cold regions of Canada. They are found in the Caribbean Islands, in Mexico, in the mountains of South America, and along the rivers and shores in Central America. These animals are literally found everywhere.
Knowing this, it is important to understand that they can live just about everywhere. While some species of bats are more commonly found in desert areas or even in cold weather areas, as a class of animals, it is common to find bats in almost any location.
In fact, there have been large colonies of bats found in large, metropolitan areas. Bats find the skyscrapers to be the perfect location to live. This is especially true in abandoned buildings. Once the bats have found a way to get into the building, they then hang from the ceiling in the upper floors waiting for darkness to come. They then head out through the entryway to the building, swooping across the landscape looking for insects. Everyone knows there are large numbers of bugs in the city, so there is a ready supply of food.
This tells you that bats can be found just about any place. While movies and television like to portray them as living in rural areas, you should not be surprised if you sought some in downtown New York or Montréal.
